A Wheat Threshing Area in Truchas, 1934

"Wheat was cut by hand with sickles and left to dry. The area was prepared as the threshing ground by wetting the ground and using goats to tamp the earth until it was like stone. The wheat was then scattered in the path of the circling goats. Later, the wheat was winnowed in the wind. The chaff was used for feed and the very fine chaff was saved for use in house plastering. Nothing went to waste." Epifano Romero

"Se cortaba el trigo a mano con segaderas y se dejaba secar. Para preparar la era se mojaba la tierra y se usaban cabras para que la pisaran hasta que se endureciera. Se derramaba entonces el trigo entre las patas de las cabras. Más tarde, se aventaba el trigo en el viento. Les daban el cascabillo a los animales para comer y el cascabillo más fino se guardaba para usar en el emplastado de las cases. Aprovechaban todas las partes del trigo; nada se echaba a perder.
