Ruperta Chávez House in Potrero, 1915

Legend has it that this house originally belonged to Bernardo Abeyta who organized the building of Santuario. His daughter Carmen Abeyta married a Chávez man from Bernalillo who brought the first sheep to Chimayó in the 1800s. When this house was built the porch viga was so large it had to be brought from the mountains by oxen. Note that the corbels are carved as part of the massive beam.

Se dice que esta casa fue originalmente de Bernardo Abeyta quien organizó la construcción del Santuario de Chimayó. Su hija, Carmen Abeyta, se casó con un señor de de la familia Chávez de Bernalillo. Este Señor Chavez trajo las primeras ovejas a Chimayó cerca del año 1810. Cuando estaban construyendo esta casa, la viga del portal era tan grande que tuvieron que traerla desde las montañas en bueyes.
